A month from now, we will be celebrating its National Children’s Book Day, held every third Tuesday of July. This date was chosen to commemorate the publication by our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, of “The Monkey and the Turtle” in the London-based Trubner’s Oriental Record in July of 1889. It is the first known published literary work for children by a Filipino.
The Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) will be heading the July 17 celebrations at Museo Pambata. The country’s children’s book publishers will be presenting their crop of publications for the year. Also, the winners of this year’s PBBY-Salanga and PBBY-Alcala prizes — Russell Molina and Hubert Fucio — will be formally acknowledged in an award-giving ceremony.
At the end of the month, the 2nd National Children’s Book Awards will also give its citations to the last two years’ best reads for children. This awards ceremony, spearheaded by PBBY and the National Book Development Board (NBDB) will be held on July 28 at the Mind Museum in Taguig.
Join us in celebrating Philippine children’s literature!
I’m proud to be part of the celebration last year as I was asked to do the storytelling at SM Sta. Rosa, Laguna. I hope I could also join again :)
